Collection Review - Battenwear FW20

The Battenwear Fall/Winter 2020 collection is made for today’s tribe of global travelers. At this start of a new decade, never before in history have people been able to jump so casually between time zones and continents (COVID-19 restrictions aside =), coast to coast, east to west and back again. Building travel-ready components into their clothing and accessories has always been a particular pleasure for the folks at Battenwear - making the perfect pocket for a metro card or passport, creating items that pack up small, and finding ways to make practical, weather proof jackets look “night on the town” ready so that you only have to pack one piece of outerwear in your suitcase.

Battenwear - Bouldering Pants

Once Battenwear opened their second office in Topanga, CA in 2017, and started commuting between NYC and LA, their focus on travel-ready gear began to sharpen even further. The FW20 Battenwear collection has many travel-ready touchpoints. Highlights include the Waist Pouch, our long-time favorite Scout Anorak Jacket, and pants like the Active Lazy and Bouldering Pants which customers tell us are ideal for navigating airports and train stations.

In their frequent travels across the country, from old stomping grounds to new and back, they have found that they also have become travelers through time, at least in spirit. They look back in order to plan forward, anticipating what is around the next corner while appreciating of what was around the last. This mindfulness of tradition and the history is reflected in their designs. Each item they make feels familiar to their customers because it is reminiscent of the gear they saw their parents wearing when they were children, or that they themselves wore at a younger age (or coveted from catalogs). More importantly, their designs are not simply retro-looking, but also uniquely contemporary in construction and fabrication. They never just copy old designs. They take ideas from the past, mix them together and reinterpret them, making fresh-feeling gear suited to today’s discerning city dweller.

Battenwear is pleased to present its Fall/Winter 2020 collection in anticipation of many adventures to come, and in hopes that both their hindsight and foresight will be 20/20 this decade and beyond.

Introducing KLEMAN

With a legacy spanning more than 75 years, René Cléon's story begins following his return from World War II when he formed a team of apprentices and bought his first stitching and assembly machines. The story begins in the family home in La Romagne, with a specialization on Kneipp sewn mixed models, and as the business grew, a factory is built. The sons Jacques and Louis-Marie took up the torch and diversified the business through the 70s and 80s.

In 1988, the KLEMAN label, under the Cléon name, was officially launched. Cléon then became a supplier for several French public administrations which trusted his know-how. The company wins increasingly large tenders; first to shoeing the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer [the French national railway company], then Air France, then will come Customs, certain fire departments, or even the French army. Initially reserved for trades seeking security, sturdiness and quality, most of our iconic models include the ISO EN-20347 standard and thus enable an additional guarantee thanks to anti-slip, abrasion resistance, and the innocuousness of materials. The manufacturing of our products remains exclusively carried out in France in our workshop in Anjou.

KLEMAN shoes have survived the fashion cycles by offering a raw and authentic unisex style. Their models will charm both men and women who seek a certain efficiency in a pure and uncompromising style. Their PADROR leather moc-toe shoe and other references of boots or derbies have remained unchanged since the 1980s. A classic and functional worker shoe which now dresses a new generation of talented urban dwellers around the world. KLEMAN sets up the professional shoe as a real accessory of a timeless workwear style.
